Here is the NODA review for Sweet Charity:

Cuffley Operatic Society – Sweet Charity

Director – Cheryl Nicholson Musical Director- Steve Block Choreographer – Wendy Couldridge

It is not often that I attend a first night but Cuffley’s first night was a convincing, well executed performance. Angie Frost as Charity Hope Valentine gave a thoughtful, mature characterization and I felt at times that when she spoke to her audience that it was indeed an intimate conversation between her and me. Her timing was good and the manipulation of her intonation patterns gave a different slant to the delivery of her dialogue. Craig Berry made a convincing Vidal with his good looks and stage presence. Jude Stoughton as Helene and Elaine Magnal as Nickie were both well cast and their number “Dream Your Dream” was a high spot of the show. James Droy’s characterization of Oscar was well delivered however, I did feel that he needed to look somewhat older, matched against Angie. Unfortunately his makeup on stage looked quite youthful and this seemed out of place. “The Rhythm of Life” and “I love to cry at weddings” were both good company numbers but some top notes were a little suspect. The orchestra blended well with the company and I did not feel they were too loud. Harmonies were excellent. Although the sets were quite basic they worked well within the confines of such a small stage and it was refreshing not to seethe ballet bar in the Fandango Ballroom.
A most enjoyable evening, well done to all and thank you for your hospitality..

Additional notes not for publication in NODA News

It was disappointing that on a number of occasions faces were shadowed by not being lit appropriately or the inexperience of not knowing how to use the stage at Cuffley.

If Charity fell into the lake then she would need to be much wetter than she was.

The plaques at the on set of the production cold not be read from where I was sitting. They needed to be much bolder.

As I said above, I did have an enjoyable evening as I am sure did the rest of the audience and now with the condensed format for the NODA News we are given the opportunity to point out confidentially, issues which could be addressed for future productions.

Regards to you all
Vicki Avery
